I first heard this tune when I was given as a christmas present Peter Horan and
Fred Finn’s recording, ‘Music of Sligo.’ This was a Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann
recording released in 1988, some tracks were recorded in Dublin, and some came
from archive recordings dating back as far as 1959. Tragically Fred Finn died in
January 1986 whilst this album was being put together. There are many great tunes
on this album but I always thought the ‘Ebb Tide’ was something special.
Sounds like "Sean Ryan
Sean Ryan’s tunebook "The Hidden Ireland" has this reel listed as "The Dash to Portobello".
Just a point of clarification. The tune as transcribed is not the same tune that is played on the Tommy Keane/Jackie McCarthy CD that is listed. That is an entirely different tune in G, hornpipe, and can be found in Breandan Breathnach’s "Folk Music and Dances of Ireland" (I’m not sure which volume).
This tune is indeed Sean Ryan’s composition "Dash to Portobello", which is also listed at https://thesession.org/tunes/533
The other "Ebb Tide" is a hornpipe composed by James Hill.
Re: The Ebb Tide
Ebb Tide is names Sean Ryan’s on Fire Aflame.
