I think the earliest publication of this tune goes back to the 1790s, where it is called “New Christmass” - in other places it has the alternative title “The Bass Reel” (see the Skye Collection, for example). “Bear in the Buckwheat” is a Cape Breton title for the same tune, although the B part, as played by Donald MacLellan (and also by Buddy MacMaster), has wandered quite far from the original.
