Mrs. McPherson Of Gibton

From the recording The Legacy Of The Scottish Fiddle, Vol. 1. I choose Reel as this is the best tune type for the tempo that Alasdair Fraser and Paul Machlis play this tune at. It could possibly be classified as a March. Who wrote this tune and which McPherson Of Gibton is the composer of the tune referring to.

Re: Mrs. McPherson Of Gibton

Possibly a tune by one of the Gow’s?

Mrs. McPherson Of Gibton, X:2

The setting as played by Jordi Savall and Andrew Lawrence-King from the album The Celtic Viol.

Re: Mrs. McPherson Of Gibton

"Mrs McPherson of Gibston" (note spelling) was composed by William Marshall and published in his 1822 collection. Mrs MacPherson was the wife of the Duke of Gordon’s factor who lived at Gibston Farm, just outside Huntly in Aberdeenshire. Captain Charles Gordon, an illegitimate son of the Marquis of Huntly, married Mrs McPherson’s daughter Elizabeth.

By the way, Marshall classed this tune as a reel.
