Braes Of Mar, X:2

Battlefied Band version of this tune. From "Beg & Borrow", track #5.1.

From the sleeve notes:

"On this track we start with a very old tune that exists in
many forms. In Scotland it’s best known as a strathspey,
‘The Braes of Mar’ and is a very popular ‘danns a’ rathaid’
(dancing at the crossroads) tune on the melodeon in
Lewis, based on the port à beul, ‘Pòsaidh sinn mas tig
an t-earrach’ or ‘Dòmhnall Magaidh air an eathar’; In
Ireland you will fi nd it as ‘Jenny will you marry me’ and
also as ‘The Devil is Dead’. It is used as a song melody ‘Dá
Bhfaigheann Mo Rogha De Thriúr Acú’. In north Donegal
Johnny Doherty plays it as a Highland, and has localised
it as ‘The Braes of Maas’ and, in the south of Ireland, it is
often played as a polka. In Quebec it’s reputedly related
to La Belle Catherine. Many thanks to the good citizens of
Facebook for chipping in with alternative titles.
Right there we have proof of massive cultural interplay
if you still need convincing!"
