Bob Macpherson’s

This is my first attempt at writing in ABC notation. I read about this tune on The Session under the recording details by Ceolbeg - https://thesession.org/recordings/3017. Raked around the internet and found the tune in "Donald Sutherland’s Collection of Highland Bagpipe Music" as an e-book download available here: https://pipingpressshop.com/products/donald-sutherland-collection for the "princely sum" of £1.50!

I tried to get rid of the slurs because there are none in Sutherland’s book to no avail! I hope it’s all okay. Perhaps someone will point out any mistakes and how to correct them.

Re: Bob Macpherson’s

Third tune - I remember it well 🙂 Played with a bit of an Irish accent, rather than the influence of the Highland bagpipes, but that’s how we were playing at the time.

Re: Bob Macpherson’s

Key is D major, not "C" - that needs to be edited, please.

Bob Macpherson’s, X:2

Kenny, I did not know the original setting, however, I’m happy to oblige. Being an amateur whistle player, I had already transposed it into D major. Hope this is okay!

Bob Macpherson’s, X:3

Oops, I forgot about the grace notes!

Re: Bob Macpherson’s

The grace notes are only of use to Highland pipers. Not really necessary here. The first 2 "settings" are completely redundant, and should be deleted. Thanks for taking the time to make these corrections, Bob, but all you really had to do was change the key signature of your first setting from "C" to "D".

Re: Bob Macpherson’s

How do I delete the first two settings?

Re: Bob Macpherson’s

Bob, if you send Jeremy (the Boss!) a message from the link on this page:

https://thesession.org/users/1

He can delete the settings for you.

When you’re typesetting bagpipe music with ABC, you can use the "special" key signatures of K:HP or K:Hp - they remove all the wierd slurs and typeset the gracenotes correctly. The first displays no key signature as normal with bagpipe music, and the second inserts a "mixolydian" signature of two sharps and a G natural.

On here as Kenny says generally better to leave the gracenotes out unless there’s a good reason to, but if you do want to add them you can put [K:HP] with the square brackets as your first line before your ABC text and that will force the key signature to do what you want.

Re: Bob MacPherson’s

Had a look at our album sleeve. Composed by Pipe Major D.S. Ramsay.
