Dennis Liddy

Dennis Liddy came over to my house sometime last year to buy a fiddle from me and he played this tune. I since learned the tune from Michael Harty the flute player but this setting may not be Dennis’s as I have not heard his recording of it on Waifs and strays. Must get a copy.

sounds like billy bunkers ( first in the laurel tree set) on Old Hag.. Bothy band album…

kurt

Jimmy Noonan does a great job with this tune on his Maple Leaf CD. I slowed it down on the computer and learned it this weekend. It’s a fun tune for the flute. I’m happy to see it posted this morning….

Billy Brockers

A year has passed since I heard Dennis play this tune, and as I said this setting comes from Micheal Harty who got it from Paddy O’Brien from Co Tipperary. Tunes change with time Tanya, who knows exactly how this one started out.

Crowley’s ??

Looks like the first of the 2 “Crowley’s” reels to me.

I agree with you Dow but this is a nice tune setting. Question is whether it deserves it’s own page or a setting in the comments box of Brocker’s.

I like this setting too, Donough. It’s more like what we play here because we have both Crowley’s reels in a set as well. Maybe the orig. source is the same…

Sure doesn’t it all come out of the great musical melting pot. What tunes do you usually play this with in a set?

It doesn’t get put with anything in particular as far as I know - it just happens!

?????????

What’s going on with the “other names” section?

……and who was “Billy Brocken” ?

Posted by .

Don’t you really know him? I can’t believe it!

I took the name of this tune from a recording by Paul O’Shaughnessy in a set of two reels: Speed the Plough/ Billy Brocken’s. That’s how he calls it.

Just learned this…

What a satisfying tune to play. Good one to practice the short rolls on too.

Here’s an interesting setting I transcribed from the playing of fluter Michael King on the online Comhaltas archives.

I enjoyed that clip. He’s got a really nice tone when he hits that bottom D, and some lovely variations. And look at how old they are – makes you sick doesn’t it!

also features on one of the Bothyband albums

Billy Brocker’s

Here’s a transcription I did of Edel Fox’s playing on the Clare FM Kitchen Session (Season 1 Show 2) at Patsy O’Grady’s house in Knockadangan, Kilmaley. She played it three times changing a couple of notes here and there each time. There were a few chords, cuts, and other occasional ornaments that I couldn’t catch (but which are very specific to the concertina).

Billy Brocker’s, X:9

Mary Bergin’s setting (roughly), transposed in the key of D (she plays it on a Bb whistle). Of course the variations she plays on bars 8 and 11 probably don’t sound very delicate on any other instrument than a flute/whistle!
