Irene Goodnight
From Pete Seeger’s AMERICAN FAVORITE BALLADS. Quite popular everywhere.
Re: Irene Goodnight
I don’t believe Pete Seeger wrote it but he made it popular.

I’ve always associated this with Leadbelly.
Re: Irene Goodnight
Sylvia : from Pete Seeg’s collection, he always gives the song-writer if known. Good book, you can get it on the Internet.
Re: Irene Goodnight
Yes, the Leadbelly one popularised the song and was probably the first to record it. However, it’s origins aren’t clear.
Re: Irene Goodnight
What’s clear is that if the Lomaxes hadn’t recorded Huddie Ledbetter, The Weavers would never have come across the song and recorded it.

Re: Irene Goodnight
Is Irene Greek for peace? You classical scholars anywhere ?
Re: Irene Goodnight
It seems that it is. The Greek word ειρήνη (eiríni) means peace.
