Fjellvåk, X:2

Here it is in D, as I’ve heard it played at a local session under the title ‘Mountain Bird’. I don’t know anything about its provenance: any information out there?

Re: Fjellvåk

Nice one. BAZZA = compliments o the season…….

Re: Fjellvåk

Nice to see it in D but not sure how it is reckoned a C major chord goes with a C#…

Re: Fjellvåk

Feadan - thanks f0r pointing this out. In bars 2 & 4 of my original notation I’d put an F#m in brackets, which is thing I do to suggest an optional chord change. A musical colleague puts them through a programme to convert them to abc files, and it does some odd things sometimes. Here it didn’t recognise the brackets, so defaulted to another chord of its own idiosyncratic choosing. To err is human . . . but to really screw things up you need a computer.

Try it with an F#m and see what you think. Meanwhile, I’ll see if I can get it changed.

Re: Fjellvåk

On the Northern Wind website they say, " Fjellvåk or ‘The Mountain Bird’, a Norwegian tune by John Ole Morken, Olav Mjelva and Annlaug Børsheim traditionally played on the Hardanger Fiddle."
I have seen on other sites that it is thought to be trad. Swedish.
Fjellvåk is the Norwegian name for the Rough Legged Buzzard, thought that does not sound as nice as "Mountain Bird" 😉

Re: Fjellvåk

Yeah, I think F#m is a much better choice.

Re: Fjellvåk

X:2 now updated with the preferred chords.

Re: Fjellvåk

North-American birders would call the bird a "rough-legged hawk". The term "buzzard" is sorta discouraged because it’s ambiguous. In some dialects of English, it means vulture, while in others it means hawk. Also, "buzzard" is widely considered somewhat derogatory, while "hawk" isn’t, and just refers to a class of birds.

Anyway, it’s a great tune.
