The barnacle

this goes well in a set with sonny’s mazurka, and like all mazurkas, should be played with a slighly dotted rythym.this tune is not a waltz

Redowa

I first heard this tune in the early 1980s. It was played, and recorded, by a band called "Iona", who were from in and around Leeds. They called it the "Barnacle Redowa". Checking a dictionary gave the following definition of "redowa" :
"a Bohemian folk dance similar to a waltz or a polka."
Anyone come across the redowa before or know any others?

Gan Ainm by any other name - another 3-part mazurka

I was just considering this and had some vague memory of something similar already noted on site, and I was right. This 3-parter, whatever version, works out well for the Mazurka-Waltz waltzing the third part. Here’s one of several versions of it I’ve known:

Miss Lambert’s Waltz

This tune appears in the Francis Reynolds manuscript of Gaigue, Ballinamuck, Co. Longford written in the last quarter of the 19th century. The title he gives is ‘Miss Lambert’s Waltz’.

X: 6 “The Barnacle Mazurka” / “The Co. Down Mazurka”

S: "Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Ciarán Ó Maonaigh, Anna Ní Mhaonaigh, Gearóid Ó Maonaigh, Francie Mooney: Na Mooneys", track 11, the second of two mazurkas…

Re: The Barnacle

Lovely version, is X: 6. Thanks for sharing it, ceol! As you usually notate swing, I’m assuming this is played straight? Alas, I do not have the recording to check…
