N’Fheadar

The title means “I don’t know” or “I wonder.” This tune, composed by Peadar O’Riada of Cul Aodh, Cork, was shared in a large tune learning session at the Roche Harbor Irish Week retreat (Washington State). May it travel even further. Hear it on the CD Triúr Sa Draighean played by Peadar Ó Riada, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Martin Hayes. The high C in the penult bar is a literal (little-finger) stretch for a trad fiddler but a position shift might work with practice.

N’Fheadar, X:2

Setting I did by hear from the video in YouTube where Peadar O’Riada plays this tune live in the ceremony where he was awarded TG4 Composer of the year 2008.
Peadar O’Riada composed this reel for the occasion:

I did the music score as simple as possible to leave the basic melody line of the tune.

This is the video, the reel is the second in the set:

I don’t know (no pun intended, see name of tune) if this YouTube clip is the same as the actual album, but it’s Hayes and O‘Raghallaigh playing it at O’Riada’s home. There are some differences from the previous settings here.

On fiddle, for that sweet high c in the second half, I would shift on the open e string, play the b (ring) c‘ (fourth finger), and then shift slightly back to catch the a with ring finger and you’re back in first position. Or you could leave the c’ out and play |b2 ab gfdc|, or replace the c’ with g: |bgab gfdc|

Tune starts at 2:00:
