Stoned Giants

This is one of lots of tunes by Jennifer Wrigley of Orkney, who has written many good tunes and plays fiddle along with twin sister Hazel on guitar and piano. You can buy their book “TRAD SECRETS”, which also includes 3 or 4 tunes by Hazel - who has added chords to all the tunes. Get it on the website “Wrigley Sisters” - The Reel.

Jennifer “has no objection to her tunes being posted on thesession”. This tune has an uneven rhythm in the 2nd part ie 6/8, then 7/8, and back to reel time. Haven’t asked her but I guess she’s added these bizarre time sigs to add to the impression of the stoned giants, probably the 4,000 years old stones of the Ring of Brodgar by the Loch of Stenness. Unless she meant the even older Stones of Stenness. A talent among the several tune writers of Orkney - see also Thora Linklater’s “The Golden Slipper” and her Walrus tune, both posted by me and excellent!

Re: Stoned Giants

Have tried to put in triplets in last line - but they didn’t come out with my attempted edit.

Re: Stoned Giants

Jenny wrote a note in the Trad Secrets book beneath this tune.

“These giants are now better remembered as the famous standing stones circle, the ‘Ring of Brodgar’.”

Re: Stoned Giants

Have started new medication so no getting stoned on booze for me (though on 16th July I had a pint of Tennents in the just re-opened Star Bar close to R. Clyde, very cold and super-delicious).

Re: Stoned Giants

Triplet is written as “(3” not “3)”

Re: Stoned Giants

So last two lines should perhaps be as follows:
CBAG FDFG | CGFE B,Fde | (3cdc (3Bcd (3ABA (3GAG |
(3FGA ED E4 :|

Don’t know the tune so not sure where the 6/8 and 7/8 come in.

Re: Stoned Giants

Thanks a lot for info re triplets in ABC notation, will get round to editing them when I have the energy. Tune is good fun, I don’t know Wrigley Sisters cd which includes this tune.

Re: Stoned Giants

I cldn’t find the tune on Huldreland cd when I looked. Think tun eis way above my level on fiddle!

Re: Stoned Giants

Track 4 second tune, after ‘The Giant Party’. It prompted me to listen to the CD again, and v. good it is too. I’ll see if I can transcribe the tune in question.

Re: Stoned Giants

Go to it Bazza - incidentally, my ex-partner Bari (72) sometimes gets called Bazza or Bazz, his full name is Abdul Bari, 1/2 Bangladeshi, 1/4 Irish, 1/4 English born Birmingham, UK. He tried to learn penny whistle a few years ago.

Stoned Giants, X:2

Forgetting that there was already a setting here, I transcribed X:2 from the recording and it came out as above. Slightly, but not materially, different from X:1, and with chords that seemed to me to fit, but use or ignore as required Probably not the sort of thing that would gain much currency in sessions because of the irregular phrasing, but a tune with great character, I think. Reminds me a bit of pieces by Ian Hardie and Paddy Fahey - both of whom have written tunes that take you where you didn’t expect to go.

(I don’t know why the abc has done odd things to the way some groups of notes are beamed, by the way).

Re: Stoned Giants

Abc - along with computer tech in general - DOES do odd things Bazza.😊

This tune requires a really virtuoso fiddler to do it justice.
