Muñeira De Paula

Asturian Traditional Music. This is a muñeira, Asturian equivalent to the Irish jig.

This tune is a composition of Xuacu Amieva, one of the most known Asturian pipers.

Funny enough, I got to know this tune in a trad session in Galway by local musicians. Although Irish bands may have tunes from other countries in their albums, it is very rare to see Irish musicians playing these kind of tunes from other traditions in a session. This happened around the year 2008 (I don’t remember the exact year) and the pub was Tig Coili in Galway city. They suddenly started playing this tune, It was a huge surprise to me, I knew It was Asturian music. One of the players was Colm Naughton and he just confirmed to me now that they learned the tune from Xuacu Amieva himself in around the year 1999.

This tune is in one of the albums of Xuacu Amieva where it is played in C Major. I have transposed it to a more session key: D Major
