Nine comments

I first heard this tune on Hammy Hammilton’s CD “The Moneymusk”. Hammy plays a duet with my admired Paul McGrattan and they play a set with this tune and “The Hous on the Hill” which I know by the name “Mrs Thornton’s” and it makes an excellent set.
It’s a very easy and simple tune but I really like its melody and it’s rhythm.

This tune is also on John Carty & Brian McGrath “The Cat that Ate the Candle.” The second tune in Jackie Coleman Set.

Biddy Ryan’s

John G. Walsh calls this tune Biddy Ryan’s on his album “The Galway Rambler.” Does anyone know who Biddy Ryan is/was?

Breathnach Vol. 5

In the Breathnach vol. 5 #138 this reel is called “Father Kelly’s” and according to notes on the tune, Father Kelly wrote this one. But don’t stick in Father Kelly’s as an alternative title because he apparently named all of his tunes and didn’t like them being known as “Father Kelly’s”.

Setting #2: Frankie Gavin

plays “Over The Bog Road” on the flute on that De Danann album…
Oh wait, it’s also on youtube:

Again, this is not a specific take. Instead I kind of tried to distil the basic melody (with only a few minor variations), compensating breathing breaks and stuff.

[ There was no accompanying photo to the music, so I added a photo which was taken in Ennis I think 3 years ago, and amused me.].

Re: Over The Bog Road

On De Danann’s ‘Selected’ album, where Frankie plays this tune on the flute after Ringo’s bodhran, the sleeve notes say that they learned the tune from a 78 record of accordion player George Ross (who was also the source for other tunes on other albums by them). I’m wondering can anyone confirm this since I can’t establish if George Ross did indeed record this Father Kelly tune. It’s certainly not on any of his four 78 records made for HMV, and I’m not aware of any other commercial recordings of his playing. There is a story circulating among his relatives that he made some recordings during his visit to the US in 1956 after winning the All-Ireland accordion competition at the fleadh. Anyone able to shed any light on this??
