The Wellerman

Since this song went viral, I was surprised not to find it on here.

This is the more Whistle-friendly version in Eminor, whereas the original from TikTok is in Cminor.

Thanks to Sarah Jeffery from TeamRecorder for inspiring me to put this online.

Re: The Wellerman

Btw. it’s a slow reel. Unfortunately there wasn’t the option "sea shanty".

Re: The Wellerman

Lololol thanks for this. I hope you enjoy unlimited tendies! Apes Strong Together!

Re: The Wellerman

Forgive ignorance: what are ‘tendies’?

Re: The Wellerman

@Bazza It’s a weird thing about GameStop stocks and the squeeze. Like chicken nuggets, I think.

Re: The Wellerman

Thanks for the reply, Anon Piper. I know I ought to feel fully informed now but, you know, somehow …

The Wellerman, X:2

It won’t get out of my head after all those viral videos, so I’ve been idly wailing away at The Wellerman on low D whistle all week. Here’s a transcription that’s as close as I can get to the sung version. Pardon any ABC errors, I’ve not really done much transcription yet.

Re: The Wellerman

"Unfortunately there wasn’t the option "sea shanty".
Well firstly, sea shanties are songs and this site is about tunes. Secondly, "The Wellerman" despite what people keep calling it, is not a sea shanty. And then…
"Since this song went viral, I was surprised not to find it on here."
Well that’s hardly surprising given that it’s a whaling song from New Zealand.

Re: The Wellerman

You are right there Johnny. I always felt that it reminded me of something else, but that song wasn’t even the one. There is another.
I think as a song its best quality is the harmony. And as a song I like it, but as a tune it seems just about worthy of a ‘Spongebob Square-Pants cartoon ditty to me. I certainly wouldn’t bother fiddling it. Maybe slowly with a concertina ??

Re: The Wellerman

Not really a reel. Or a session tune. Or a tune at all. But it is catchy, I suppose.

Wellerman

Whether it’s a ballad or shanty—it is fun to play and listen

Especially the "tube" rage with fiddle….

Re: The Wellerman

There seem to be more and more ‘non Irish Session tunes’ submitted nowadays. I find this one particularly irksome. I mean, sure it’s great song and makes a nice change to most of the modern garbage they play on the contemporary radio, but really, does anybody play this ‘tune’ in a traditional Irish session? (as an instrumental melody it’s boring) In my opinion it’s been posted on the wrong site. As muirn pointed out, it’s not even a reel.

Re: The Wellerman

@Bazza update: apparently nothing to do with chicken nuggets. It’s just money

Re: The Wellerman

If we’re going to fit The Wellerman into one of the Irish traditional dance idioms, I think Polka is the best fit.

Re: The Wellerman

Well done Richard. I wouldn’t have thought of it. The tune still grates on me (like the Chicken Dance), but as a short polka with a bit of flourishy bits thrown in, I can at least imagine it being legitimately employed as a bridge between a couple of other tunes.

Blood from stones there Richard.

Re: The Wellerman

Thanks, that overplayed song seemed to call for Polkaisation, it having too few melody notes to make much of a reel IMHO.

Re: The Wellerman

@Micheal The Whistle It’s a thing about the gamestop stock short squeeze that happened in January. The investors call themselves apes 🙂
