The Sore Foot has been added to 2 tunebooks.
I was bobbing about on the net, as you do, one evening and I came across a tune in Bill Black’s Cape Irish website, taken from Breathnach’s Ceol Rince na h-Eireann Volume One. I hadn’t heard The Sore Foot in any session I’ve played at and I couldn’t remember hearing it on any album I’ve owned. So I sat down to play it…
I was really taken with it. Bill Black lists the tune as being in AMinor but I reckon it’s in ADorian. But don’t hold me to that. There are no Fs in the tune as transcribed but when I’ve slipped one in as a variation in some of the bars, a sharp F seems to suit better than a natural…
Breathnach’s version has a few triplets which don’t sit well with my playing of the tune. It’s such a simple and straightforward little reel that I think it can do with being presented here as simply as possible. We can all add our own ornaments (or not) as we see fit.
