Rhu Vaternish

This appears on the biggest-selling bagpipe album of all time Farewell To The Greys.

The tune is the Scots Gaelic song Failte Rubha Bhatairnis (Welcome To Rhu Vaternish) but it’s listed as Leaving Rhu Vaternish (Fagail Rubha Bhatairnis) on the album Farewell To The Greys, and it’s common to see this tune under that title.

Many of these Gaelic airs have a waltzlike feel and are often played for the waltz, however Highland pipers usually write these tunes in 6/8 time and call them Slow Marches, or Gaelic Airs.

This tune is the first in a four-tune medley on the album Farewell To The Greys; it’s followed by three jigs:

Rhu Vaternish
Groatie Buckie Mannie
The Duck
Eleanor’s

Re: Rhu Vaternish

The song:
O fàilt’ air Rubha Bhatairnis,
Gur maiseach leam do chluaintean;
Thoir soraidh slàn gu Hàllain,
‘S nach fhaod mi thràigh a bhualadh.

‘S i Ghearmailt le cuid innleachdan
A chuir mi fhìn gu cuantan,
‘S nam faighinn dhachaidh sàbhailte,
‘S i Màiri nach biodh gruamach.

‘S gun aithnichinn fhìn do bheanntanan
‘S gach gleann a tha mu’n cuairt dhut,
‘S gur ann aig Lag an t-Sìthein
Tha ‘n rìbhinn rinn mo bhuaireadh.

Bha uair a gheibhte fiùrain ann,
An Trùmpan ‘sa cheann uachdrach,
A dh’fhalbh a dhìon ar dùthcha dhuinn
Tha ‘n-diugh ‘s an ùir mu’n cuairt dhaibh.
