I Lost My Hat In Cathal

This tune, I believe, was composed by Angus R Grant.
I am not sure if the title is correct as I’ve not come across any recordings and it doesn’t appear to be credited on any of the Shooglenifty albums. That’s not to say that it isn’t out there though.

Also, I got the title as “Cathel” as opposed to “Cathal”. However, the latter is actually a place name. So, I imagine this is correct.

I made a few tentative enquiries before submitting the tune.. See https://thesession.org/discussions/46641 but no further info has come to light so far. Therefore, I thought I’d submit the tune anyway as it’s a very catchy piece.

If any more details come to light I shall, of course, amend it accordingly.

The tune appears to be what has sometimes been described as a “single reel”, basically 4 bars in each part with a slight difference in the “second time bar” on repeat although it hasn’t been transcribed that way here. I think it looks a little tidier as above.

I Lost My Hat In Cathal, X:2

From the notes I have, the tune appears to be in A Mix.

However, it also sounds very good in “A” too and I can’t make up my mind about which way is best. So, I’ve added this setting so that you can take your choice. Make sure that you all play the same one together, of course. 😉

Learned this great tune in the 90s from a friend who was in Angus’ ALP class. I think the name is
‘I Lost My Hat in Cashel’

Re: I Lost My Hat In Cathal

You may well be right, Troubadorian.

It was written down as “Cathel” (as opposed to either Cathal or Cashel) but I also picked up the tune in Angus’ ALP class. As I recall, he didn’t hand out the actual sheet music very often and this was often transcribed for the rest of us by fellow class members.

I’ll add ‘I Lost My Hat in Cashel’ as an alternative title meantime and change it if any more information comes to light.
