Fifteen comments

Moth in the lantern

This tune provides numerous opportunities for rolls and variations. Most of the dotted quarter notes can easily be rolled. The c# dotted quarter in the second part can be rolled on a whistle by quickly sliding the three fingers of the top hand in a sweeping motion from just below the mouthpiece of the whistle toward the whislte end. This was my first attempt at transcribing in ‘abc’ format. I have played this tune over the years in a set beginning with Faraway (waltz)/Moth in the Lantern (jig)/ Jenny’s Chickens (reel).(Usually coming out the waltz and into the Moth slowly, then increasing tempo to the point where I can play Jenny’s Chickens double time to the jig).

Moth in the lantern

Where did you get the tune, Imnotirish?

Apology

Composed in fact by A. Doughty. [ Andy Irvine composed the tune which followed it on “Second Story”. ]

Sounds a bit 7/8 ?

Just listening to this tune on Second Story and it sounds a bit 7/8 (3+2+2) rather than 6/8 jig tempo

I never heard this tune but 7/8 sounds like a good idea in regard of the Title (though it works well in 6/8 too I must say)
Here (with 7/8=3+2):

Again as regard to its name, one could alternate 6/8 and 7/8 for repeats!

“with 7/8=+2” Ah ah! Sorry, that’s a 5/8 version I submitted here!

And now,(Proudly presenting!) the Moth in the Lantern after too many hours of head banging!

The first part might be good enough, with its strong down beat on low F that suggests the moth’s fall to the bottom of the lamp. I guess the rest isn’t worth a moth’s dropping. But if moth’s droppings are your thing, get your hands on Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc’s work, a 17thC French astronomer of high renoun!

Moth in the Lantern.

Hey, thanks Birlibirdie! It was an early attempt at writing a tune. I appreciate your feedback. Suggestions for the the other two parts are welcome!

Re: The Moth In The Lantern

This is an original composition of mine. It was originally written in 6/8 time, on the whistle.

Re: The Moth In The Lantern

Good tune.
(My reference to moth droppings only refered to my rather poor attempt at writing it in 7/8
..3+4 is what was called for in the first two parts, not 4+3 , I believe.
It works perfectly well in 6/8 of course and would do very well as a French cercle circassien dance I reckon.

Moth In The Lantern - correct version

This is the correct version of the tune based on the transcription by Juergen Gier in the Traditional Music Archive. It is also in Amin not Bmin based on my listening of the Kevin Burke’s Open House version. It goes as a set with Take no Prisoners written by Andy Irvine.
