Slide For The Census

A report* in yesterday’s Guardian newspaper (UK) referred to a space in the recent Republic of Ireland census form where respondents could add a message of some sort that they would like preserved for posterity. One such item was a tune written, and posted on social media, by Naimh ni Charra. I have attempted to reproduce it here.

Unfortunately the screen shot of the MS shown in the Guardian missed the heading and first line, so I’ve taken certain liberties in submitting it. I’ve made a guess at the content of the first two bars, given it a title, and added some straightforward chords. My apologies to Naimh if any of this does violence to her composition, but I think it’s an uncomplicated and delightful slide, and seemed a good one to share with Sessioneers.

Re: Slide For The Census

The full picture of the score and it’s title can be found by following the Twitter link in The Guardian.
Title “O Ghluia go Gluin”

Re: Slide For The Census

Thanks Peasea. I don’t do Twitter, etc., so hadn’t delved further into it. Do you know what the title means, and whether my guess at the first two bars of the tune is anything like correct?

Re: Ó Ghlúin Go Glúin

Where did the questionable chords come from, swisspiper?
And should the ending of the second part not be the same as the first part?

Re: Ó Ghlúin Go Glúin

Thanks for the correction to bar 2 (mine was a guess as I hadn’t seen the whole original). But I still don’t know what the composer’s title means. Translation, anyone?

I’m afraid the chords - questionable though they may be - are mostly my addition, except for the amended bar 2 and a slightly displaced A7 in bars 4 and 8. As ever with chords, to be used or ignored as you will.

Not sure what you mean by the ending, Donald. Apart from dropping the last F# in bar 8 (the lead-in to the B part) the endings do look the same to me.

Re: Ó Ghlúin Go Glúin

Title translates as “From Generation to Generation”.

The ending of each part is G2A B2d|c2A f2e d3 rather than G2A B2c|d2A f2e d3 (c and d swap places around the bar line).

Chord wise, and given it’s a slide (so pretty nippy) I would go for:
|:D G|A |D G|A D:|
|Em |D |Em |D A|Em |D |D G|A D||

V:2 updated according to the inputs here => much better!

Re: Ó Ghlúin Go Glúin

The title literally means “From knee to Knee’. Easy to see the root of the aphorism (nathán, seanrá).
