Thirty-two comments

Baltimora salute

Tune requested by dogface.

Source: Seamus Egan
Composer: Josie McDermott ( flute player, singer and songwriter from Co. Sligo )
Transcription: g.m.p.

Lansdowne Lass

Composed by Josie McDermott, recordedby John Wynne and “Deanta”, and not by “Altan”.

Posted by .

there is another tune of the same name..composed by also by Josie Mc Dermott played by Altan as the 4th tune of a set ( The curlew…) on Horse with no name..As the name is not mentioned on the record notes but only on Norbeck and JC ABC tune finder .is it a mistake and is this the real one? so?

Landowne Lass

Paul95 - see “Gan Ainm”, and discussion “Seeking Help Identifying Tunes” both posted 19th Nov. My last 3 words were deliberate. Norbeck is not infallible. You can believe me, John Wynne and “Deanta” or not - it’s up to you.

Lansdowne Lass

Kenny, thanks for posting this. Deanta is one of my all-time favorite Irish bands. Although they play Lansdowne Lass pretty slow it sounds quite nice as a faster tune tune. I learned the tune this weekend.

Sad obsession, but…..

I’ve just noticed this posting of Gian Marco’s. It’s the same as “Lansdowne Lass”, as played by “Deanta”, and John Wynne and posted by myself - I knew it would be, coming from the Seamus Egan recording. Could someone tell me if this is the tune played by Verena Cummins and Julie Langan, and “Sliabh Notes” under this name, ( and if so, did they get it from Seamus Egan ?)

Baltimore Salute/Lansdowne Lass

The one on Sliabh Notes is as follows:

Another setting

Here’s how I play it. Can’t recall where I learned this--may have been from an old bootlet tape of Josie McDermott himself, though I’ve undoubtedly swerved from what he played. Note that I use the same ending for each part. I like all the rolls in this--great flute tune.

Will, I like your setting of this. The last bar of each part is the same so it feels somehow more balanced.

Or what about a mixture of all of them:

Yes, well done Mark. For some reason, G major tunes always suggest more options to me than tunes in most other keys/modes. I really like this one’s rambling, flowing melody line.

Nope, radirano, that one’s the Baltimore Salute: https://thesession.org/tunes/2192

The name confusion is part of the ongoing conversation amongst all these tune threads.

LOL radriano did you even bother reading my comments?!

Deja vu

I posted “The Lansdowne Lass” – as named on recordings by both John Wynne and “Deanta” – on Nov.26th 2003. This has been discussed before, and that will be my only comment on the matter

Landsdowne Lass

My apologies, I did not read the first post thoroughly. But I still don’t see a resolution to the question. Just because one person insists that something is correct doesn’t make it so. But I don’t wish to stir up old issues so this is my last comment on the subject as well. I agree that both are good tunes.

LOL. Look, I personally couldn’t give a damn what these tunes are supposed to be called. The most important thing to me is that this one is a different tune from the others, and it’s a good tune. It needed to be posted so I posted it. Simple. I’m somewhat amused that you’re both going “this is my last comment” and stomping off in a huff. What’s that all about?! You huffed that I posted the tune, or is it something I said?!

Stomping off in a huff? Well, NTI, that’s your impression. I thought I was apologizing for myself and trying to leave the conversation without making a big fuss. Seems like your LOL should be accompanyed by “and feeling somewhat insecure.”

Who me? Insecure? What makes you think I’m insecure? I ain’t done nuffin’. I never pushed her so don’t look at me like that.

It was an accident. Someone help me out here! Don’t go jumping to conclusions.

This is Mary Bergin’s version. I wrote out both A section because the second pass is just a bit difference. The B sections are almost identical.
