Also known as The New Rigged Ship.
Green Willis has been added to 5 tunebooks.
This is the 4/4 version of the jig, the New Rigged Ship. I’ve also found the jig referred to among the Morris tradition as ‘The Full Rigged Ship’.
See https://thesession.org/tunes/1207 for the entry for the jig.
The tunearch.org entry draws the connection also between the jig and the reel.
This American reel - I believe it is named ‘Green Willis’ in the old-timey tradition - is named after the musician who popularised it.
I’m currently trying to find some more obscure tunes named in his writings by the folklorist Patrick Kennedy, who listed about 40 tunes that were part of the repertoire of the musicians of North West Wexford in the early 19th century. One was a reel titled ‘The Ship Full Rigged’ and given that the ‘New Rigged Ship’ is sometimes called Full Rigged ship, this American version may possibly be one of the tunes that Kennedy was referring to.
