Devil the Care

The manuscript I have in front of me tells me it was written down by P. Donovan date given 1749. I believe he composed it, I’m not sure of the Key as it is very blurred and faded. I have set in the Key of ‘Dmajor’ though this could be wrong, I would appreciate very much if any one could tell me the right key!

I don;t know “the answer” but after a couple of turns of aural transmission I reckon those g’s would probably have tended to sharp. They sound ok natural but IMHO the straightforward character of the rest of the tune doesn’t give enough support to keep them natural.

Yes, works well in A dorian.

none of the above links are working

NOTE: Enjoyable tune! ~ Thanks for sharing it! I immediately thought of putting it in a set with “All Around the Holly Tree”: https://thesession.org/tunes/8671

In the track listing under Shane McAleer’s album “Long Time, No See”, the link for Johnny Leary’s brings you to this tune, but actually the tune on the album is this one:

Re: Johnny Leary’s

I realize the tune in this link below is in the Key of E but is this the same tune as posted above? It sure doesn’t seem like it and if not, does anyone know if the sheet music for this tune that Fergal Scahill’s refers to as Johnny O’Leary’s Jig is on this site somewhere? Thanks so much.

Re: Johnny Leary’s

Thanks Jeff!

Re: Johnny Leary’s

See Hennigan’s Favourite in Johnny O’Leary of Sliabh Luachra (#181) for a three part jig that is similar.

Re: Éirinn Go Brách

Changed name from Johnny Leary’s on the grounds that its a more distinctive title, and that’s the name in JOL’s book.
