Farewell to Whalley Range

This tune is off a Michael McGoldrick John McSherry Album "At First Light" and was originally transcribed by Devin McCabe. Thanks Devin, its a great tune. I play it in a set of Tar Road to Sligo/Give us a Drink of Water/Farewell to Whalley Range. Enjoy….

It was composed by Mike McGoldrick when he moved from Whalley Range, area of Manchester he used to live in. Also on capercaillie’s albulm ‘Nadurra’

Key

This is actually in F# minor pentatonic, not A major - although I suppose you could supplement some very interesting chord progressions in A that might fit………

Key and concertina

Hi Ben
Yeah you’re right but there’s no choice in the drop down menu for F# minor so I just went for the nearest key signature. I meant to make a note about that in the first comment. Thanks for reminding me….Any other concertina players tried this one yet? Its a beauty to twist the fingers around

Variation

Cool variation from Nádurra (Capercaillie). 2nd and 3rd bars:
| EFA BAB cEF | AFA BAB cBA |

Variation

Pere, the same variation is on ‘Upside Down’, but the second c is natural! Very Jazzy!

2nd tune after Farewell To Whalley Range

Hi
someone knows how is called the 2nd tune after Farewell To Whalley Range played by Mike McGoldrick and Dezi Donnelly in The Full Set ( on RTE) ???

As is mentioned in the comments of Roddy MacDonalds the g’s should be natural not sharp

Emin Version

Hi,

I transcribed this tune and this is how I play it on the flute (it’s easier to play for in this key).

Chords

Can someone post the chords? Even though I’m learning this on the fiddle I like to know the chord changes… TIA…. victoria

Title

The title is mistranslated. Fáilte Go Whalley Range means Welcome to Whalley Range.

Doesn’t the title "Farewell to Whalley Range" appear on McGoldrick’s own album, At First Light?

score

chords (?)

"A": E D /E /Am7/Bm7 - " B" : Am7 /Bm7/C/D

Chord variation

F#mAE
DEDE
Hold theF#m for two bars and give it a good, driving chop. The second part is lighter and even ABmABm could work but I love the IV/V for its allusion to the tonic.

Re: Farewell To Whalley Range

Its nice to go:

A: F#- /E /D /D /

B: B- /C#- /D /D /

And playing with sus 2’s and major 7ths thoughout those chords can be very lovely and evocative.

Re: Farewell To Whalley Range

Anyone got any straight note for this? I’ve done it by ear but few niggly bits x

Re: F#m Key in abc

I am obviosly a bit late about the F#m key trouble that Jamminben has pointed 12 years before…
Well, if you just type F#m instead of Amaj as a K: item, you simply get your 3 sharps (# is somewhere on your keyboard; on the french keyboard, it’s twinned with the 3).
Anyway, that’s work in my soft wich is the very tiny ABCJ 1.8 (written in Java and portable)

Re: F#m Key in abc

"F#m" is actually the good abc standard way to fill the "K:" field, what must work in any serious abc soft
