4 Bare Legs Together

Great name eh? This is in fact a very old tune, from William Vickers’ manuscript, dated 1770. Someone mentioned English tunes in a recent discussion thread, and I was reminded of this great tune from the northeast. It even has D#s in to annoy the fiddlers! Not much is known about Mr. Vickers, but he wrote the following little poem:

"Musicks a Crotchet the Sober thinks it Vain
The Fiddles a Wooding Projection
Tunes are But Flights of a Whimsical Brain
Which the Bottle Brings Best to Parfection
Musisians are half witted mery and madd
And Those are the same that admire Them
Theyr Fools if they Play unless their Well Paid
And The Others are Blockheads to Hire them"

… fiddlers AND whistlers…

Vickers Gdor setting

My original submission came from the pipes playing of Chris Ormston. Here’s the abc for the actual G dorian setting that appears in Vickers. Notice that the 2nd part is repeated:

The tune is apparently derived from a rather long-winded 9/4 tune called "Jack Warrel’s Hornpipe". Transcriptions can be found at JC’s Tunefinder.

“Four Bare Legs Together” ~ after the 9 O’Clock watershed ~ 8-)

This is an old favourite, but I don’t play it as ‘Dorian’. Here’s my transcription with some variations thrown in with the repeats…

A CD I was given years ago by a friend, entitled "Spirit Of The Border", had this fine tune played by Chris Ormston on the Northumbrian smallpipes, paired well with Kissed Her Under The Coverlets. Both tunes were instantly added to my modest repertoire.
The CD is a collection of mainly Borders and Northumbrian tunes, but a nice assortment of pipers shrilling their wee chanters. One noteworthy track, IMHO, is a set of Gillian’s Apples/My Darling Asleep/King Of The Pipers, performed by Adrian Schofield (hope I got that right) on Northumbrians, very nice I thought.
