The ABCs here are slightly odd in that they seem to be a mixture of the versions played by Solas and Jerry Holland. The 2nd part is pure Solas but the third part is closer to Jerry Holland’s. Both Solas and Jerry Holland repeat the 2nd part as a 4th part before returning to the start again.

This is Jerry Holland’s version of the tune but showing alternatives to the notes below D in the third part for the benefit of flute and whistle players.

Does anyone know how this time came about?
Obviously I thought Jerry must have written it for his mother. And she must have been pretty fierce, moody, angry, crotchety … or bipolar … And then I thought: Maybe she just laughed a lot, even in hard times.
