An Port Ard: High Jig

Obviously, this version of the tune comes from Harry Bradley’s solo album. I don’t know much about the tune, but Harry wrote he got it from Fintan Vallely, who informed him it’s a composition of Junior Crehan.

You’ll find the transcription from Ceol Rince na hEireann at JC’s, but Harry’s interpretation is much more inventive, especially in the second part. I think it would sound great on pipes. Enjoy!

Try it in E

This is recorded in E on the Vallely brothers’ Callan Bridge; it’s considerably easier (at least on the pipes) in this key. They follow it with “The Girl from the Big House,” which is called Robbie Hannon’s on the album.

Well, it’s not the *High* Jig anymore if you play it in Edor.

Other name for “The High Jig”

I recently learned the High Jig and was looking for it here. My teacher knows it from the recording Callan Bridge by the Vallely brothers, but the accordant link from the album page on thesession.org links to the High Reel. It goes somewhat like f | gfe fed | Bcd e2f | gfe f2e | dBAB2…

Thanks in advance!

Re: Other name for “The High Jig”

The tune, composed by Junior Crehan, is in Ceol Rinnce na hEirreann as the High Jig. Junior himself said:

I composed a jig but had no name
And then one night to Quilty I came
For Thomas Power I played it through
And he named it ‘Mo Ghra Thu’

And so it is named.

Re: Other name for “The High Jig”

Thanks!

yeah, it’s lovely in E on whistle/ flute. Kinda got into my head from Martin Hayes new CD ‘Welcome Here Again’ where it’s 2nd track, though he plays a couple of semitones higher.

Martin Hayes’ version in E♭ or D for the rest of us

I got hooked on this from “Welcome Here Again” too, and found when I tried to learn it they are actually playing it in the rather unusual key of E flat. I hear something like this, though there are variations. I figured it out first in D and then transposed it back to E flat.

High

Notation as heard on the Callan Bridge album by the Vallely Brothers. Played in a set with The Girl of the House and Sunnyside. Listed on the album as Sunnyside. I like it because it cooks…so to speak. Will post the other two tunes above as well.
