Courtown Harbour

From the album “The Mulcahy Family.” They follow this jig with Charlie Lennon’s “Smiling Bride Jigs” (The Smiling Bride & The Handsome Young Maidens).

The Mulcahy Family is from West Limerick: Mick Mulcahy (accordion) and daughters Michelle (harp, concertina) and Louise (uilleann pipes, flute). This is one of the best traditional albums I’ve ever heard.

Courtown Harbour

I just received my own copy of the Mulcahy Family CD. The liner notes state that this tune was composed by fiddle player Jimmy McHugh who lives in Glasgow.

Nice tune but inaccurate 2nd last bar - should be |B/c/dB AFE|

Dr Dow

Do you mean the 3rd last bar?

David

Jimmy himself put this tune with two other jigs of his own composition. ‘Gahagan’s trip to Hawick’ named after John Gahagan of Glasgow & ‘Sean McCusker’s farewell’.

Re: Courtown Harbour

Just wondering if anyone has contact with Jimmy’s son Benny in Glasgow. I’m trying to find out if the tune was originally titled as Courtown Harbour, which is in Wexford. There’s a story told that Jimmy composed it during the 1962 All Ireland fleadh which was held in Gorey and he was staying in nearby Courtown. On the other hand, I’ve heard the title is actually a mishearing by people of Port town Harbour, referring to Port Glasgow? Any thoughts or information would be greatly appreciated….

Re: Courtown Harbour

Hi John - you should be able to contact Benny through the “Jimmy McHugh Memorial Concert” website here :

If for any reason it doesn’t work, please let me know.
