This Donegal reel was transcribed for me by Malcolm Reavell, from a tape from the Willie Clancy week from some years ago. Subsequently recorded by “Altan” and more recently, “Danu”.
In English, the title is “The Blacksmith’s Fancy”. I think this was requested a while back.
Anybody have advice for playing this tune on a flute? Solo, I just transpose the octaves for the low notes, but it isn’t quite the same. I imagine it’s more effective in ensemble.
Wonderful first part. Is it just me or is the second part devoid of anything interesting?
Maybe it will grow on me.
Even if you do think the second part is boring (and I could see why) I still think it would be great to play for the first part alone. I would also revise the abc a bit by putting it in Dmix at least to start, modulating to Dmaj mid-tune.
By the way the version on Frank Cassidy’s Níl Gar Ann is killer.
