Nine comments

True to its title, this tune has a friendly, inviting sound to it.

I’ve shown it here with quite a few triplets. You can, of course, replace these triplets with long notes if you wish (e.g. just one long G instead of GFG). On the other hand, you could throw in even more triplets especially in that run-down in the second part.

By the way, this is definitely not a tune to race through. This is one to play at a nice, measured pace if you want to reveal its true beauty.

This is apparently a hornpipe version of a Donegal Highland of the same name.

"Let’s not have any unpleasant dissent about this one’s origins. It’s clearly named after a place for Catholics to go for a few quiet days’ contemplation and rest, most likely written in the Blasket islands in the late 1800’s."

Whittle Dene - A tune no doubt from the North East of England. Whittle Dene is a place west of Newcastle where reservoirs were built in 1845 or thereabouts, under the initiation of William Armstrong. It led to the formation of the Whittle Dean Water Company, and the reservoir complex watered Newcastle and Gateshead on its own until the demand for more water led to further reservoir supply.
A good place for fishing, I’m told.

The tune has similarities to other Geordie hornpipes.

It appears in Köhler’s Violin Repository (I came across it when checking out another recent submission here) under the name of ‘Wittle Dean’. John Chambers lists it as a reel, but it has obvious hornpipe tendencies.
