The Holloway Road Fling

This tune comes from flute duet album “Double-Barrelled” by Kieran O’Hare and John Skelton. Obviously, it’s a reel setting of “The Cat that Ate the Candle” (not F. Kennedy tune) or “The Cow that Ate the Blanket”:

Actually I haven’t got the recording yet, but the sample clip is generously long, so I could learn it. Both jig and reel settings are recorded in a set.

“The Holloway Road Fling” ~ as a highland fling

It’d work, just ignore the :||: repeats and swing it.

Here are the jig relatives in triplicate, repeating slainte’s above:

Don’t like this as a fling. Maybe as a double reel it’d be ok.

The Holloway Road Fling, X:2

Hello all. Through another discussion I started regarding the third tune in track 13 from John Skelton and Kieran O’Hare’s album Double-Barrelled, I believe we have deduced that the existing setting here is actually the second tune in the set - which is the reel version of the first tune jig. So I believe it is the middle tune of the set, rather than the third tune - The Holloway Road Fling. I am submitting a transcription (improved ABC actually supplied by DonaldK) of what I hear for the third tune (which I believe is actually The Holloway Road Fling).

Re: The Holloway Road Fling

You should create a new tune page, not add your setting here, as it is a different tune. Then you can edit the album to point to the new tune, and also edit this tune page title.

Re: The Holloway Road Fling

I’m hearing some small but not insignificant differences in what’s played the first go round on the album. E.g., the G in the Part A 3rd measure strikes my ear as odd, but I’ve listened closely, repeatedly, and am sure that’s the note played.

I’ve left out most of the cuts and taps except for two in Part B that are needed to match the notes as they sound on the recording. At least on the first pass, O’Hare or Skelton (I don’t have the liner notes) rolls none of the dotted quarter notes.

Re: The Holloway Road Fling

Nico, I understand what you’re recommending, but I don’t know if it’s my place to take the liberty of renaming Slainte’s “setting” (actually I don’t even know the process). I will have to look into adding mine as a new tune page and linking the recording to it. Thanks.

Gimpy, I totally agree with you about the G in the third measure of the A part (being in the recording). I had it that way in my transcription initially, but it sounded odd as I played it on the banjo so I fudged around it. I also left out the embellishments due to my current limitations in technical ability on my instrument. I think you’ve caught them very accurately, though. I probably should have mentioned in my comment that it was a close approximation and not a note for note rendering of what he actually plays on the recording. Great tune.

Re: The Holloway Road Fling

Maybe that quirky G is an example of how fluters “fold” around notes below D. On fiddle, one way I would play that phrase is: |DB,DF AFAB|. So the G would be a substitute for that low B,.

One possible setting of the tune for fiddle:

X: 1
T: Holloway Road Fling
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
K: D
D2 DF AFAB|deed efdA|DB,DF AFAB|dBAF (3EFE DE|
D/D/D/ DF AFAB|deed efdA|DB,DF AFAB|dBAF (3EFE DA||
defd A2 AB|defd ~B3c|defd Bcde|dBAF (3EFE DA|
defd AFAB|defd ~B3c|defd Bcde|dBAF (3EFE DE||

Re: The Cow That Ate The Blanket

The tune posted above by slainte is a reel version of the jig “The Cow That Ate The Blanket”, presumably created by John Skelton, so I’ve changed the name. It’s the middle tune in a track from John and Kieran O’Hare’s recording “Double-Barreled”, posted here on Youtube :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWBV7woQnEo

Opens with the jig, changes to the same tune played as a reel at around 1min [ posted by slainte ], and “The Holloway Road Fling” - posted recently by Bribak starts around 2m11s.
To avoid further confusion - nothing at all to do with the reel of the same name which I posted some years back.
