Eleven comments

Newmarket has to be the most prolific source of polkas. Here’s another one, from the playing of Jackie Daly, another prolific source of polkas.

Art O’Keefe’s?

This is completely different than the Art O’Keefe’s I play… but it’s a good tune, I’ve heard it before.

The Newmarket, X:4

Pretty much an amalgamation of the previous versions with some extra bits and bobs. Learned from a ceilidh band tunebook.

Billy Mahony’s

This is a lovely polka from the playing of Timmy O’Connor, an older boxplayer from Toureendarby, Newmarket, North Cork. Timmy recently had a CD put out, and I believe this is it, but I was fortunate enough to learn it off him in person on a Monday night at Scully’s in Newmarket. If anyone gets the chance to be anywhere close to North Cork on a Monday night, there’s great music to be had in Scully’s. Timmy plays much more to Tom Billy’s style than Patrick O’Keeffe’s, but is Sliabh Luachra through and through. I like to play it after the Glin Cottage Polkas (https://thesession.org/tunes/559 and https://thesession.org/tunes/1113#setting14369 ).

Re: Billy Mahony’s

Seems to be another setting of The Newmarket.

Re: Billy Mahony’s

I figured it had to be here somewhere!

The Newmarket, X:6

From the playing of Timmy O’Connor.

Re: The Newmarket

The tune THE BAG OF BEER from Solas CD WAITING FOR AN ECHO ist linked with this polka,
but it is a different tune (a jig).
