Twelve comments

I learned this jig from Christy Barry just a few weeks ago. He had no name for it. I can name it after Christy, but there are already two jigs associated with him on this site, so I keep it nameless to avoid confusion.

As you see, it’s a very simple tune, but Christy magically turns it into a gorgeous tune adding lots of variations and ornamentation. Here I submit the bare bones of it allowing your interpretations.

If you happen to know the title of this jig, please let me know.

I know this tune as "Miss Walsh". Dale Russ recorded in a set with "Tell Her I Am" on a solo album of his called simply "Irish Fiddle". He says it’s in O’Neill’s Dance Music of Ireland.

Miss Walsh

Aye, as posted, these are the 3rd and 2nd parts of "Miss Walsh".The first part - not here - is very similar to "The Ship In Full Sail". I’m sure the full 3-part version is in "O’Neill’s".

Thanks for quick replies. I renamed it as Miss Walsh. Sorry for the omission of the 1st part, but I’m sure Christy Barry didn’t have it. If you know the 3-part version of the tune, please transcribe the missing part. I don’t want you to steal it from JC’s or other databases, though.

Miss Walsh

Here’s the transcription of the 3-part version of the tune based on Maeve Donnelly and Peadar O’Loughlin’s duet playing.

It seems this Gmaj version comes from Paddy O’Brien.

“Miss Walsh’s Fancy” ~ O’Neill ~ axing extra bars and transposing

Apologies, I’d left extra bars in the 3rd part and there was an ink smudge in my old copy of O’Neill’s that had me write out BGF instead of the way it’s played ~ BAA, the 3rd bar of the first part…. I’ve corrected those and also given a transposition to make comparing the G Major takes with O’Neill, though I have added lead-ins too.
