Mike McGoldrick’s Fused version
After a good 2 hours battling with micro-dots, this is as close as I could get to a decent transcription of the first time round Mike plays it on track 3 of Fused… and now my brain hurts.
I haven’t a clue what a non-jazzy or ‘straight’ version of Jimmy Brown’s should sound like, otherwise I’d have notated that instead, but this is a start anyways. Enjoy.
Dotted, jazzy, "non-straight" rhythms: that’s the whole point of it being dedicated to the one and only Godfather of Soul!!! (and here I was stretching to hear some connection between the pretty flute tune on the CD and Mr. Please Please Please Himself…)
Wrong Key listed
btw, should be key of Gmaj, not Dmixo. it’s hard to sound more major than that!
Oh. That James Brown!
the fog has lifted 🙂
It’s a good transcription. After I got the hang of it on my flute I took it for a spin on the CD and its pretty good. The tune plays as written so I think its pretty good. It’s a pretty sweet tune to improvise on as well. Good job!
By the way, this is indeed a D mixolydian scale, which surprisingly enough sounds major. Notice the C NATURAL in the song… Mixolydians sound almost major but sound funny/cool because of the whole tone between 7 & 8. You could swear the song is D major anyways because of the fact there is only 1 C natural played in the whole tune, which is used to lead up to the second part.
I think the version recorded by McGoldrick, Shannon, Murray & Donnelly is in Ebmaj. It’s great in that key. I might see if I can put a transcription together.
Good transcription and a great tune. Took me a while too get the hang of the semi quavers but we got there in the end.
This is definitely a bit of an odd tune rhythmically, but I guess the thing with James Brown makes sense… Great tune, though, I think.
This is where I first heard this tune:
This is how I play the tune, and how it seems to be in the video:
I edited a few bits of the abc’s:
