Drive Hawkie Through The Water

This reel is an old tune (18th century?) based on a song from the northeast about a cow called Hawkie who is adored by all and produces lots of milk, but hates crossing water. The tune is really simple and takes no time to learn, but it’s one of those tunes you can’t end. It’s very addictive - give it a try!

Nice tune

Yeah, I like this. It shares a nice rhythmic similarity in the opening bar with Jack is Yet Alive (G). This might be a nice pair of tunes to add together into a set.

Aha yes, I bet it would. Will try that tomorrow…

reminds me of ‘Aul lang syne’…

…aye, if you slow it right down!…

(C or A?)

Drive Hawkie Through The Water, X:2

This version is as played by Sharon Creasey at the launch of the FluteFling Collection. She calls it “Ca’ Hawkie Through the Water” and plays it both as a highland and, at a faster tempo, as a reel. Her introduction to the tune, followed by her playing, begins at about 5:39 on the youtube video:

The FluteFling Collection can be ordered, either as a printed book or as an eBook, here:
http://flutefling.scot/shop/. Ca’ Hawkie Through the Water is contributed by Sharon Creasey.
Extended notes to the tunes can be downloaded at the same location. Chet

Note that in her performance of Ca’ Hawkie Through the Water, Sharon Creasey repeats the entire highland version and also repeats the reel version. Chet

Drive Hawkie Through The Water, X:3

This is the reel version as played by Sharon Creasey. In the video, she plays it following the highland version which is the version previously given (X:2).

Re: Drive Hawkie Through The Water

Just a note to suggest maybe this great tune has more history and antiquity than has so far been revealed here.
The A part is pretty much identical to what John Skelton played and called “Napoleon’s charge” on the album Two tone,

I submitted a transcription of this a couple of years ago
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8We2WP2T6o

It was unnamed there and someone had suggested: “The first one isn’t Irish. It’s an old time Appalachian tune of some kind.”
