Paddy Reynold’s Jig
Paddy Reynold’s is a current NYC fiddler who was raised in Killavill, Co. Sligo - the breeding ground of some of the best Fiddlers. This tune may seem tricky because of the key but it is a wonderful fiddle tune & not really all that hard to play. I got this setting from Tony Demarco & Brian Conway’s album "Apple in Winter".
This is called Dave Collins’s jig not Paddy Reynold’s. I think Dave is a relation to Kathleen Collins, I think they are Brother & Sister. The whole Collins family was involved one way or another with music & dance.
Sorry to get technical, but it’s in B flat rather than F. It happens that E flat, the 4th degree of the scale, is not used anywhere in this tune (it is hexatonic), so you can get away with just the B flat in the key signature… Or perhaps if the 4th WERE used it would be E natural, making it B flat Lydian.
Your right - it’s in Bb Major but that wasn’t an option on the input screen.
I coiuld’ve posted it in GDor. (Two Flats) but would be very misleading to someone going by modal reference. So I left it in F.
At least someone noticed the tune!
I hate to get "Technical" myself. but you mispelled technical. 🙂
Your you’re was your not you’re; your your should have been you’re not your 😉
Dave Collins’ jig in two keys
Great tune. I think this is a version of Dave Collins’ jig in a different key - https://thesession.org/tunes/354
Is there a right key for this? I’m not sure what "right key" means. I like it best in C - I can play it in A, C, D, or G on the wooden flute - but it’s murder in F natural or in Bb.
Two more settings - G and A
Henrik Norbeck has a gan ainm setting in G:
F|G2G, B,DD|ABA AGF|G2E DB,G,|~B,3 A,B,A,|
~G,3 B,A,B,|G,B,D EDB,|DEG AGE|GBA G2:|
A|~B3 ABA|GBe dBA|G2G, B,A,G,|~B,3 A,B,A,|

~B3 ABA|GBe dBA|edB GBd|egf e2f|
~g3 fed|edB AFD|EFG AFD|GBA G2||
And Bill Black gives an A setting:
E|A2 A, CEA|B2 B BAF|A2 F ECA,|CEC B,2 C|
A,G,A, CA,C|A,CE FEC|EFA BGE|AcB A2 :|
B|cAc BGB|Acf ece|f2 e cBc|efg f2 g|

Dave Collin’ Jig
This jig can be seen on video played by Antón and Bernadette MacGabhann on fiddles at http://comhaltas.ie/music/detail/comhaltaslive_202_2_fiddle_duet/
Only ever heard it in C.
In me? Where? Anybody got a stethoscope I can borrow? 😏
Nice, laid back tune. Like the 1st part most of all.
Rollicking jig, Dave Collin’s
Have a tape of Dan Collins and guest Sheila Garry recorded in New York years ago, and they play this with abandon! Not sure of the key, but I think it was G.
Dave Collins’ Jig - small adjustment to proper key changes
The MTGuru version of this tune was in A, but actually it was written in G with a key change to A. Just a small change on my end.
Re: Dave Collins’
Could I ask please what key this tune is in on the Apples In Winter CD?Thank you
Re: Dave Collins’
Pitch-wise: G# (or Ab). I’m sure this means that they’re using the G fingerings on a fiddle tuned a semitone above (→G#D#A#E#).
