The Market Town jig

This tune seems to be related to “A Hundred Pipers” - at least the second section is quite similar.

I learnt this off a Kevin Burke recording, but I recall that there was a 2nd ending to the B-part that went something like:

B-part ~ returning to the last 4 bars of the A-part, given here with slight variations on the notation given above:

This tune is known in Scotland as “Peter Bailie’s Wife”:

Peter - or “Pate” Baillie (1774-1841) was a fiddler from Loanhed, just outside Edinburgh, and published a collection of his compositions in 1825. I haven’t seen that collection, so I can’t say whether this tune is in it.

well, slainte, mediocre as you were (or might still be?!), these jigs are both in AMajor to begin with -not a common tonality- so they have at least that in common. Sometimes such small details are enough to trigger our memory…
But this tune’s easy going pace, that first long E and the indeed very similar second parts totally justify your comment.

Just adding the fancy ending on to the first setting.

On just finding “Hundred Pipers” in one of the portland books, I’m more inclined to say that there are really the same tune: https://thesession.org/tunes/1232

There are variants between them, but no more than you’d see in variations in settings of the same tune. And the fact that the A and B are both the same shape and key melodic fragments, I call ’em variants. 🙂
