Guitarists beware

This tune is listed as G major, but it’s actually D mixolydian. New guitarists should be aware that if you try to resolve it to a G chord, it’s not going to work.
Now you know.

Another recording

Icame to this tune from an album called
Journey - The Best Of Donal Lunny (Disc 1)
same set as bothy band i.e Kesh/ Give us a drink of Water/ Famous Bellymote… but live… v.good

a snappy tune made out of only 4 different bars!
Little means, great results!

F nat

I love to play the F natural at the end of the second part in D mix.

Re: The Famous Ballymote

Just wondered if anyone knew anything about the background of this tune? I live not far from Ballymote and wondered if it was a local tune but older musicians in this area don’t tend to play it and it doesn’t appear in the older tune collections that I’ve looked at.

Re: The Famous Ballymote

Most people would have learned it from the Bothy Band 1st album. No idea of its origins, I’ m afraid.

Re: The Famous Ballymote

Thanks for that Kenny. Maybe it was a new tune written for the band. Anyway it’s a good one.
