The Mohill Reel

At the time of writing, a search under this name won’t find you another transcription, but I have found one as Gan Ainm @ http://www.irishtunes.net/reels/sionatune.html. I got this tune from some friends at my local session, and Mohill was the title they gave me. This 3-part tune has echoes of The New Policeman/Belles Of Tipperary https://thesession.org/tunes/769 and also The Steeplechase/Carrigaline/Hard Road To Travel https://thesession.org/tunes/2281 and https://thesession.org/tunes/1461.

Bulmer Sharpley Vol 4

Cronins (number 15) in above volume is very similar tho the setting is different

Can someone post it, please?

“Cronin’s Reel” ~ 32 bars & another relative

Cronin’s bears some resemblance to the A & B parts of this tune… While a family member it is distinct enough that it may deserve a place of its own…

😏 ???

How did you get there? ~ YES! ~ I’ve been doing a search and I’m just slow. I already knew the “Cronin’s” relationship to the one I just posted, but I felt it was distinct enough that I didn’t want to put it in the comments… Expect it soon though… 😉

Síona version

That first link I gave doesn’t work anymore. I managed to get the transcription from an archived source on another website. Here it is in full:

The Maids of Mitchelstown

This was recorded by Four Men & a Dog and Siona under the above title. Not to be confused with another tune of the same name recorded by The Bothy Band, amongst others.

Re: The Mohill

[The Mohill] “…was learned from Co Leitrim fiddle and flute duo, Peter Fitzpatrick and Michael McNamara. Bernie McKiernan, a Leitrim fiddle player returned from the States with this reel, where a two-part version is known as ”Billy in the Lowground“. A Scottish air ”The Braes of Auchentyre“ is also closely related.”
- sleeve notes from Cosa Gan Bhroga by Gerry O’Connor, Eithne Ní Uallacháin and Dessie Wilkinson (1987).
