Rory Gentle

Composed by Kathyn Tickell.

Kathryn Tickell named this after a friend, *Roly* Gentle.

Roly Gentle (a.k.a. “Rory” Gentle)

This tune was composed by Kathryn Tickell in memory of a friend, *Roly* Gentle (not Rory), from Cambridge, and appeared on her first solo LP, "Borderlands" in 1989, in a set with "Stellgreen". It is also on the first Kathryn Tickell Band record (1991), in a set with "Hot Rivets" (Alistair Anderson), "Tartar Frigate" and "Closed Face Reel" – and now on "The Best of Kathryn Tickell"!

It should go at a fairly brisk pace, as I recall. The abc on this page doesn’t have the right number of bars in the A music and so it stumbles as it goes into the B. I have done a revised version from it and posted it separately, but for reference (and because thesession doesn’t want extra information giving in the headers (not even composer!!!) I am adding it here as well.

“Borderlands”

As Matt Seattle has just reminded me, "Borderlands" was Kathryn’s second solo LP. The first was "On Kielderside", released in 1984.

Roly Gentle

Roly Gentle was a superb craftsman. I got to know him when he helped Juliet Beamont teach violin making in Cambridge. He made wonderful violin bows and everything he touched was superbly crafted.Kathryn met him when she was staying with me and Roly, then dying from bowel cancer visited and left a lasting impression on Kathryn. She had this tune in her head and asked me if Roly would mind it carrying his name. I learnt it and played it on my smallpipes as Roly’s coffin passed from sight at the crematorium.

Roly Gentle, X:4 & X:5

Named in memory of Roly Gentle a fine craftsman from Cambridge. Roly met Kathryn when visited while he was dying from cancer. This version was dictated over the phone by Kathryn for me to play at Roly’s funeral on the northumbrian smallpipes. I played the tune at the Cambridge Crematorium as Roly’s coffin passed from view. Roly was a close and much missed friend.
I have also added a harmony was written by Greg Smith that was played by professional violinist, Jan Kaznowski, at the Memorial concert for Roly a month after his death. I played the tune on the Northumbrian smallpipes in Em (the pipes play a tone low) and Jan played the harmony in Dm (X:5).

Re: Roly Gentle

There is a VHS recording of Greg Smith playing the harmony part of Roly Gentle (with a group of other fiddlers) at the final concert of the first Shetland Fiddle Course held at Burwell House 19-23 August 1991, at which Catriona Macdonald was the tutor.
