I wrote this hornpipe in the Newcastle style for NSPipes with a low B key, although with a couple of tweaks it’d go on fiddle too. It’s meant to be played as though it’s in 12/8 - nice and smooth and flowing like this:
B2c|d2g g2e f2d fga|g3 d2c B2G D2C|B,2D G2B C2E G2c|B2A G2B A3 B2c|
d2g g2e f2d fga|g3 d2c B2d c2A|E2A Bcd c2A D2F|A2G G2F G3:|
|:A2G|FED F2G A2B c2A|B2G G2F G2A B2d|e2c g2c a2g e2^c|ded ^ce d3 def|
g2b gfe d2D D2d|c2D D2c B2d c2A|E2A Bcd c2A D2F|A2G G2F G3:|
I like this tune and have been polaying it on English Concertina but I’m sorry, it just doesn’t sound like a Tyneside Hornpipe to me.
The A part is fine (and original ) but the B goes more like a set dance. I keep hearing the Ace and Deuce of Pipering when I play this. I suspect that the critical bar is bar 6 where the two pedal figures are not completed by a third and the tune continues off in search of more broken arpegios. The rhythmn is fine and the modulations are fine. A few more falling sixths would be more typical but possibly toocorny for comfort.
So as I said, nice tune, and I will undoubtedly be playing it , but not a Newcastle Hornpipe as we know it.

Thanks Noel. After a bit of thought I think you’re right. It’d need to be more arpeggio-y and maybe with some 6th leaps or something. Now I feel challenged to have another go and do it properly this time! 🙂
I tried again and made a better job of it this time - it was a lot more difficult to write than I’d expected: https://thesession.org/tunes/4163.
