Kitty The Hare

From the repertoire of the esteemed Mr. McConnell. Also recorded at one time by Sean Keane[Galway] and others. A fine whistle tune.

Re: Kitty The Hare

First heard it on Altan’s "The Poison Glen". What a tune. Any idea where McConnell would have gotten it? And would Altan have learned it from him or gotten it by another route?

By the way, the tune with this name on "Sweet Rural Shade is not this one. It sounds very familiar, but I can’t place it at the moment.

Re: Kitty The Hare

Hi Daniel - the LP sleeve from Cathal’s "On Lough Erne’s Shore" says :
"Two* little-known reels from near my home in Co. Fermanagh, and still played today. I got them both from Big John McManus, who got them from his uncle, the late Hugh Gunn."
Cathal was the source of many tunes recorded by "Altan".
[ * - the first was "Big John’s" reel, which - without checking - I think was also recorded by "Altan" at some point.]

Re: Kitty The Hare

Hi Kenny, thanks for this. "Big John’s Reel" was indeed recorded by Aotan, I just expanded my catalog of their recordings again as I am once again on a Donegal fiddle binge, as I like to call it. I wonder where "Kitty the Hare" on Sweet Rural Shade comes from. I think it reminded me a little of "Leslie’s Reel" or some similar tune.

Re: Kitty The Hare

I think you’re spot on with "Leslie’s" reel, Daniel. Wouldn’t be the first time a tune name was listed wrong on a recording.

Re: Kitty The Hare

Not the first time, and it won’t be the last. A pity there’s such confusion between such great tunes. I don’t think this one ever made it onto a BOTL record, which is a shame. Anyway, good tune that I’ll have to learn. 🙂
