Nice tune

Good one , Peter. Certainly John Sheehan of the Dubliners used to play this, and I seem to remember hearing he "semi-composed" it , based on a piece of classical music. Don’t know for sure whether or not that’s true. Anything on the Custy & O’Neill sleeve notes about it?

No information on the tune in the notes of Custy & O’Neill’s recording. They are joined by Sharon Shannon on fiddle on the track.

The Prodigal Son revisited

I got a version of this tune in 1984 from an interview with the composer (name long since forgotten by me!) given on one of the Irish radio stations (RTE 1 or 2). It was part of a set of variations. I liked its potential as a dance tune for some clog dancers I was involved with. My version was considered a success by them. I’ll have a go at submitting it.

Sorry. I’ve been told I can’t post my version as a separate tune, so I’ll put it here.

As you can see there are differences as well as similarities!

Re: The Prodigal Son

Just heard this on an old video of the Dubliners in the Netherlands in 1980: smashing tune! Fortunately someone supplied the name of the tune in the comments below the video.
John Sheahan plays it slow and undotted first before going into the hornpipe version and then back again to the slower pace.
On this recording at 8.02. but worth listening to/watching the whole video!
