Christmas in Killarney

Can I pass the buck to Glauber for starting the discussion thread on Christmas? Yes, I know this is a bit cheesy, especially knowing that Bing Crosby once recorded a version of this, but a friend brought this to our session last year at Christmas time, and it *is* a jig (or more likely a slide)….

Composed by Redmond, Cavanaugh, and Weldon, sometime before Crosby’s heyday. There are lyrics, too, but I’ll leave that up to you songsters and websmiths to find.

For flute (Glauber) and D whistle, you could avoid that low C at the end of both halves by playing |EFE D2 E|D3 D2…

Ho, ho, ho….

Words to Christmas in Killarney

I’ve been trying to fit the words to this tune:

The holly green, the ivy green
The prettiest picture you’ve ever seen
Is Christmas in Killarney
With all of the folks at home

It’s nice, you know, to kiss your beau
While cuddling under the mistletoe
And Santa Claus you know, of course
Is one of the boys from home

The door is always open
The neighbors pay a call
And Father John before he’s gone
Will bless the house and all

How grand it feels to click your heels
And join in the fun of the jigs and reels
I’m handing you no blarney
The likes you’ve never known
Is Christmas in Killarney
With all of the folks at home.

Here’s what I came up with…let me know if there are any suggestions -

If you abstract the words away, the melody will seem stronger: perhaps not as a tune but as a source of themes / inspiration..

Re: Christmas In Killarney

Jig #1 = “Old Joe’s ” jig
Jigs #2 / #3 - haven’t heard either before.
