Wishbone

I know nothing about this tune apart from it’s title, and the fact that it was played by Fr.Seamus Quinn, on fiddle, on a tape which “Ptarmigan” gave me several years ago. He played it with a lovely swing to it, and it is one of my favourite pieces of fiddle playing which I never get tired of listening to. Lots of scope for variations in the 2nd part.

How odd. I was teaching this tune the other day - mighty piece of music, and had never come across the name of it before, or bumped into anyone who knew it. (I know Seamus well but haven’t played a lot with him).

Possibly the same tape? Backed with bouzouki, and in the midst of a whole load of other fiddle playing?

This tune appears as Gan Ainm on Enda Scahill’s “Pick It Up.” I think he plays it with Jesse Smith.

continuo – bouzouki backing, certainly, but that was the only track from that session I was given. The rest was a selection of recordings from various RTE programmes. “The Wishbone” was the name Dick had given it on the note accompanying the tape. That is my only source for the tune title, and indeed, the tune itself,….although…….“slainte” – I hadn’t recognised this tune on Enda Scahill’s CD. I must give it a listen again. incidentally, “slainte”, I think I’ve identified the origins of a tune you posted a while back. Watch the comments section tomorrow – I just want to check something. Thanks to you both.

The Wishbone

Kenny, you’ve posted many a good tune here, but this still ranks as one of my favorites. Here’s one way it’s been coming out lately on my fiddle.

Apologies to Mr.Lennon

It would appear that this is a composition of Charlie Lennon, and is on his latest double CD “Turning The Tune”, which I’m happy to recommend, having bought it at the Spanish Point “launch” a week past Sunday. He plays it on viola on the CD.

Re: The Wishbone

Charlie’s version of this is quite different… I shall endeavour to put his version from “Turning the Tune” on. Might transpose it up a fifth to keep it out of viola range. Not all musicians can see in ultraviola.

Re: The Wishbone

Another beautiful tune from Charlie..
