Twenty-three comments

I transcribed this from a compilation CD in a set with another. No title was given for it so I would be pleased if anyone knows it’s name. Last year I submitted two polkas by Lucy Farr. I have made up a set using these in the order: Gan Ainm (here submitted); Lucy Farr’s no 2 (Nov 25th 2004); Lucy Farr’s no1 (Nov 24th 2004).

A long and convoluted family of tunes ~

https://thesession.org/tunes/1113

also, a few names and keys such as A Dorian or in your case, excuse the correction, E Dorian (##):

Glen/Glin/Green Cottage No. 2
Johnny O’Leary’s
As I Went Out Upon the Ice

& not forgetting "Tralee Gaol"… Actually, I prefer your notes to the earlier version of this done out in the dark matter of 32nd notes. I’m sure that contributor must have gotten his geography confused and he’d meant to say Antarctica rather than Australia, long nights and too much caffeine…

I’ve copied your ABCs and your note on the set you play this with, valued comment, so if this entry goes "POOF!" I will transfer them to the comments the other, unless you do so first…

Hi ‘c’. had not considered this in respect to being related to Tralee Goal, or for that matter ‘Glen Cottage’, which I have also started playing recently.
I already play a version of ‘Tralee’ within a set which I call ‘Fish & Taters’. I contributed that to the session some time ago. I have no details on the source of that set as it was taught to me a very long time ago by a mandoline player and I learnt it on whistle.
Interestingly & recently Johnny O’Leary’s was contributed to the session as a slide, but it was more familiar to me as a polka and I was aware of it’s closeness to ‘Tralee’.
This tune however has much which makes it sufficiently different so I hope it stands as a contribution and hope Jeremy does not remove it but we shall have to wait and see.

So! what do I call it??

“The Glen Cottage Polka #2”

It is the 2nd of the set known as "The Glen Cottage Polkas"… While it shares the same first part with all the others the second part is basically a variant of the other second parts, but as you said, sufficiently different in a few places… In you version, with very little difference aside from basic variations, it exists under this name in several existing collections…

“The Glen / Glin / Green Cottage Polka 2 / 3”

"Johnny O’Leary of Sliabh Luachra"
Edited by Terry Moylan
The Lilliput Press, 1994
ISBN: 1-874675-42-2

Page 137-138 ~ Tune #237: "The Glin Cottage Polka"
( "Glin Cottage Polkas 2" )
Again the same tune though Johnny has some different ways at times with it…for example, with the first bar, he may play it |: eA Bd| ~ or ~ |: ef/e/ Bd | ~ or ~

"Mally Presents 100 Irish Polkas"
Edited by Dave Mallinson
Dave Mallinson Publications, 1997
ISBN: 1-899512-21-7

Page 1 ~ Tune #2: "The Glen Cottage No.2"
Again identical except A Dorian instead of E Dorian and the usual variations.

"110 Ireland’s Best Polkas & Slides"
Waltons Music Inc., 1999
ISBN: 1-85720-086-1

Page 22 ~ Tune # 49: "The Glen Cottage Polka (2)"
Identical except for key, A Dorian, and the usual polka variations…

"Matt Cunningham’s Dance Music of Ireland"
Dave Mallinson Publications, 1999
ISBN: 1-899512-45-4

Page 33: "The Green Cottage Polka No.3"
Again in A Dorian and the same tune…

By ‘usual variations’ I mean, using the first two bars as an example, just four, starting with the least, in this case in both keys of A & E Dorian:

A-Part ~ B-Part

Also known as:
"The Barrack Hill" / "The Cat Jumped Into The Mouse’s Hole And Didn’t Come Down Till Morning" /

After being told off for asking a simple question I decided to waste some time in which I would otherwise have been sleeping to transcript the first tune on this video: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_pOtZkeJkLE

Your notion that this was a waste of time suggests your lack of respect for the music and for Kevin Burke, whom you don’t even bother to credit here as your source.

Posted .

Will what are you on about? I posted the link to a video of the great man playing is that not enough?

And I said it was a waste of time because sleep was more important at the time. My lack or respect for the music goes as far as actually bothering to transcribe the music from the video? Think before you type.

Your transcription is far from perfect, "D.J.F." Check before you post.

And you posted the transcription on a totally wrong page.

Enlighten me slainte, could you do one for me? Thanks, I expect it to be done in less than an hour which is how much time I spent on it coz I was tired and sleepy.

Could you tell me why it is far from perfect? Did i miss out the tempo? Also I don’t know how to do double stopping and ornaments on ABC, which is why I’m keen to see your transcription :-)

I got the link from Will CPT, ask him will you?
