Thirteen comments

I learned this tune off the Danu album “Think Before You Think.” This tune, I find, goes well with both “The Traveller” and “Glen Allen.” I like to play it at a quicker, more up-beat pace than normal.

First recorded by Michael Coleman

I *think*…

Chieftain’s Version

On “The Chieftain’s 2” it goes:

Does anybody know the correct name for this tune?

There is a nice video of the Allow Ceili Band playing this tune at the following link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hX3cETXDs60

The tune is the second in the set of four tunes. One of the comments on that YouTube video says that the tune is called ‘The Mountain Top’. But there is is already a tune on thesession.org with that name, and it is not the same tune.

Does anybody know the correct title? I would like to replace “Gan Ainm” with a better title.

Thanks!
-Mark

The title does seem to be Mountain Top.

After posting this tune, I found more tunes on thesession.org with the name “Mountain Top”. Some of those are clearly the same tune as this one. I wish I had found those tunes before posting this one. My bad.

Great tune. I’ve never come across it named other than the Mountain Top - and I’ve never heard ‘The Mountain Ranger’ called the Mountain Top before. Good that you took your version from a Ceili Band recording, good reliable versions without variations.

The Mountain Top, X:5

A setting which appears in the Roche collection (Volume 1, #181), where it is given the title of The Crooked Way To Dublin. This however, is clearly the same tune as The Mountain Top. A tune from the family “correctly” named The Crooked Way to Dublin can be found at https://thesession.org/tunes/14886

The Mountain Top, X:6

A second setting which appears in the Roche collection (Volume 3, #87), again given the title of The Crooked Way To Dublin. This has a somewhat strange part A, which led me to wonder whether to post it as a stand-alone, but given the part B, and that Roche obviously considered it to be a second setting of the same tune led me to post it here.

Re: Holly Bush

Name from James Morrison LP/78
