Kilcooley Wood (hornpipe)

Leeds piano accordion player Helen Flaherty is the source of this hornpipe. Helen is one of mighty players of the city and loves to play modern compositions with the old-fashioned feel, such as Martin Mulhaire’s “The Golden Keyboard” and Vincent Broderick’s “Spider’s Web.” I didn’t know anything about the tune, but a bit of research shows that it was penned by Tippeary fiddler Sean Ryan.

…Tipperary….

Fun Tune!

Simple, happy… Just like me! ;)

Mike Rafferty gives an alternative title of “Kevin Rowsome’s” as he learned the tune from Kevin, grandson of Leo Rowsome.

Re: Kilcooley Wood, bars A1 and A2 etc

Interesting that in the A1 A2 bars Eileen O’Brien plays it (and she doubtless knows how it was composed):

not

and for what it’s worth, that’s also the only way I’ve heard it, from Damien & Padraic O’Reilly (on the Riches of Clare Vol 2 CD). Quite a different sound.

Kilcooley Wood, X:3

This is I believe how Brian McNamara taught the tune in a class at Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy many years ago. It is close to the original as written by Seán Ryan and suits the uilleann pipes very well.
