Dermot Grogan’s

From the Bumblebees ‘Buzzin” album (1999). One of my favourite hornpipes.

Dermot Grogan is a box player from Co. Mayo, who now resides in NY. There are several tunes associated with him, and they all sounds lovely.

I like this. Those leaps from the low D are great. Never heard it in a session though.

Re: Dermot Grogan’s

Owen Hand, the composer of this tune, told me that its proper name is "The Echoing Strings".

Re: The Echoing Strings

What instrument does Owen Hand play, Nigel ?

Re: The Echoing Strings

I never heard that Owen played anything other than guitar? The title certainly makes sense if you play it in open position on a guitar…

Re: The Echoing Strings

If I ever knew what instrument Owen Hand plays, I’ve forgotten. He said it was a four-part hornpipe and was composed by himself in the early sixties. First played publicly in Ring, Waterford at a new compositions competition. I haven’t heard the four-part setting.

Re: The Echoing Strings

Are there 2 "Owen Hands" then ? I’m thinking of the songwriter who wrote "My Donald", but this is the first I’ve heard of him playing a melody instrument, let alone any Irish traditional music. Was it an Irish musician with the same name , in which case, my apologies for creating confusion here ?

Re: The Echoing Strings

Just looked at Owen’s obit in the Scotsman in 2003: confirms he played guitar, but no other instrument mentioned.

Re: The Echoing Strings

I’m an idiot. Owen Hackett. Sorry, everyone.

Re: The Echoing Strings

That had just occurred to me earlier this morning, Nigel. All sorted. Hope all well with you. Kenny
