A sweet little tune
This tune apparently has become known from an ad on Irish television. I was taught it by Michael Rooney, when he was visiting Nelson (New Zealand) for Ceol Aneas. It’s played at a moderate pace, and resembles a planxty in character. Thanks Michael for teaching me a lovely tune.
This was (as far as I know) written by John Sheehan, fiddle player from the Dubliners.
A reel or a hornpipe?
It’s on the DVD The Dubliners live in Germany (1995). John Sheahan talks about the tune in an interview. He says that he listened to a lot of baroque music which inspired him.
It sounds rather carolan-ish to me so I would class it as a listening tune.
Amongst Friends, X:2
Transcribed from a YouTube video of the composer playing it.
Re: Amongst Friends
Another great tune from John Sheahan: it came up on YouTube after I’d been listening to "Spanish Point" - and, by coincidence, one of our band members had brought an abbreviated version to our band practice last week! I think John did do an album of his own tunes way back, but not sure if it is still available. Would love to have it, if it is!
