The Dooney Rock jig

This is another Sean Ryan jig, which the Tap Room Trio and Providence recorded. I don’t know much about this tune except its composer, but a bit of research shows that it is in Breathnach’s Ceol Rince Vol 3.

Often played after “The High Part of the road” which is also a composition of Sean Ryan.

Is it?

So I’ve heard anyway.

The person that told me it was said she taught it was. She thinks she’s wrong though after being quizzed on it last week.

‘The High Part of the Road’, 52Paddy - I think it would have appeared in one of the two books of his compositions.

Somebody wrote it, that’s for sure. Either that or it was made up. 8)

Don’t know about what’s in the SR books but if you listen to Seán play this on the 2CD or the very same recording on Come West Along The Road Vol 4 DVD you can hear him quite clearly playing C#s in the 2nd part, which utterly changes the character of the tune.

That and a G# in the fourth bar of the second part. Cullinan & Crotty played it that way as well, as it is in the book.

Modified slainte’s setting to A mixolydian in the 2nd part, added Peter’s G#, changed the first a titch too.

In the YouTube ‘Bring Down the Lamp’ clip posted by brujamala above, SR plays his composition The Dooney Rock (showing composed by him) followed by The High Part of the Road, called ‘Willie Clancy’s Jig’ at the start. It would be good to know who wrote HPotR, though Breandán Breathnach named it…see CRÉ I.
